Report of Green Computing Audit
LCD display will use musch less power than this and also provide a stand-by mode running at
less than 2W. Therefore a high efficiency screen is recommended.
The security software installed (Norton Internet Security) does not have a current subscription;
the subscription purchased is for Norton 360, which is not installed. It is recommended that
Norton Internet Security be uninstalled, and Norton 360 installed; however, given the age, it is
possible that Norton 360 may slow the computer down unacceptably. If so, Norton may be willing
to convert a licence of Norton 360 into Norton AntiVirus or Internet Security (which are less likely
to slow down the computer), we would recommend installation of Kaspersky Internet Security.
The computer has a number of software utilities that start when the computer boots but which are
not regularly utilised; these occupy RAM and consume CPU cycles, which on an old computer
will result in reduced speed. It is recommended that these “auto-runs” be minimised.
Backups of the hard disk are not regular; given the age of the computer, there is therefore a risk of
data loss if computer failure results in or is caused by hard disk failure. It is recommended that
automated regular backups be implemented.
The tasks for which this computer is used are all low-intensity. The tasks can thus be allocated
onto a “server” PC by means of a virtual thin client, assuming the “server” has spare operating
capacity. To do this, a wired Ethernet connection must be provided, and to connect this to the
wireless network, a bridge will be required. It is therefore recommended that when the
computer fails a wireless-Ethernet bridge and virtual thin client be installed as replacements,
with the HP Pavilion PC acting as the server.

HP Pavilion PC
The HP Pavilion a6330a is around 3 years old. Given its likely 8-year life-span, power saving
upgrades are likely to result in a net saving. It has no specific power-saving hardware features.
The HP Pavilion a6330a standard specification has an Intel Pentium E2180 Dual-Core CPU
running at 2GHz (Passmark score 1125; 65W TDP). The available “upgrades” do not offer better
